Throughout history, the vulva has been viewed in remarkably different ways. In prehistoric cultures, it was often associated with fertility, creation, and the continuation of life. Over time, however, many of these meanings were gradually obscured. Religious, social, and cultural changes increasingly transformed the female body into something to be controlled, concealed, or censored. What had once been connected to life, protection, and power often became associated with shame or taboo.
Contemporary artists have revisited these forgotten histories, exploring the vulva not only as anatomy but also as a symbol of identity, freedom, diversity, and self-expression. Their work reveals how cultural meanings can change over time, while symbols continue to evolve and acquire new significance.
