Carolee Schneemann and the Body as Art

Carolee Schneemann was one of the most influential figures in feminist performance art. Throughout her career, she challenged traditional representations of women by using her own body as a medium for artistic expression.

Her most iconic work, Interior Scroll (1975), featured the artist reading from a paper scroll that she slowly extracted from her body during a live performance. Rather than treating the female body as an object to be viewed, Schneemann transformed it into a source of knowledge, creativity, and artistic authority.

For Schneemann, the body was not only physical but also symbolic. She described the vagina as a space connected to birth, transformation, sacred knowledge, and creative power. Through her performances, she challenged cultural taboos and expanded the possibilities of how female experience could be represented in contemporary art.
