British artist Jamie McCartney is best known for The Great Wall of Vulva, a monumental sculpture composed of 400 plaster casts of vulvas arranged into large panels. Created between 2006 and 2011, the project was developed in response to growing anxiety about genital appearance and the increasing popularity of cosmetic genital surgery.
What makes the work significant is its focus on diversity rather than idealization. By presenting hundreds of casts side by side, McCartney demonstrates that there is no single "normal" appearance. The project challenges misconceptions shaped by media, pornography, and beauty standards, revealing the extraordinary variety of real bodies.
Unlike many earlier artists who approached the vulva symbolically or metaphorically, McCartney made anatomical diversity itself the subject of the artwork. His work has been used in educational and medical contexts and has become widely recognized for its role in promoting body acceptance and reducing genital shame.
